Abandoned Paper Mill, Falkland, Fife

Stacks Image 827
This paper mill is a random collection of large brick warehouses. I doubt it was planned to look coherent but somehow the composition works well. This photos is a long exposure, which smooths out the clouds and brings out the contrast between the sky and the brick (I’m a big fan of brick). The steel fire escape helps establish the scale of the building, you can see how large it is in relation to the size of the steps. I love the formal gird of rectangular windows in the background, capped with four ventilation cowls on the roof. Scotland has a large number of abandoned and derelict industrial buildings, they are often unloved but can be surprisingly beautiful. The building is due to be demolished in the near future.
